Polish fugitive deported to serve sentence
Federal authorities say they have deported a 49-year-old man wanted in Poland for racketeering, fraud, extortion, battery and other crimes.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says in a news release that Slawomir Grymuza (SLAV’-o-meer gri-MUZ’-ah) was flown from Chicago to Warsaw Monday and turned over to Polish authorities.
Grymuza was convicted in 2001 of a series of crimes committed in the 1990s and sentenced to just over four years in prison. But he became a fugitive and has been sought by Interpol since 2009.
Immigration officials say he had been living in suburban Arlington Heights since entering the United States on a temporary visa in 2006. He had since married a U.S. citizen and was attempting to become a permanent resident when immigration officials learned of the 2006 Polish warrant.
