Habitat for Humanity store to be open Sundays for summer

Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley ReStore, 800 N. State Street in Elgin, will now be open on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. through Sept. 30.

The new summer hours are in response to customer demand and the overall success of the store, according to ReStore Director Deanna Davies.

“We’ve toyed with the idea before of being open on Sundays, given that it is the second most busy day in retail, and with the success of the Elgin Farmers Market on site on Saturdays, as well as the fact that we’ve had customers inquire about our being open on Sundays, we thought we would give it a try,” Davies said.

“This is a customer-driven experiment. It will be just for the summer; we need to be shown that Sundays are indeed a day people want to come to ReStore.”

Store hours will now run 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

ReStore is a 40,000-square-foot retail center that accepts donated new and gently used home improvement and building materials from individuals, retailers, manufacturers, contractors and distributors.

The items are sold to the public at greatly reduced cost, with proceeds benefiting the home construction costs of Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley.

Since opening in April 2006, ReStore has raised enough funds to construct 26 homes and has diverted an estimated 3,500 tons of materials from landfills.
