Tax preparer pleads guilty to fraud
A South suburban tax preparer has pleaded guilty to federal tax fraud worth $2.8 million.
Federal prosecutors said Thursday that 48-year-old Michael Singleton of Homewood has admitted filing more than 500 false federal income tax returns. They say he also failed to file income tax returns for his business, didn’t file personal income tax returns and prepared false returns for clients.
Singleton has agreed to pay $2.8 million in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service. He operated ITA Services in West suburban Bellwood. Singleton is to be sentenced Aug. 22. He faces a maximum three years in prison and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines.
