Carter, Kreps lead UIC rout of Roosevelt
Paul Carter had 24 points and 9 rebounds, and Robo Kreps added 20 points as host UIC defeated Roosevelt 94-54 Monday night.
Carter and Kreps combined for 5 of the team’s 9 3-pointers, and Zavion Neely contributed 10 points for the Flames (1-1).
Paul Tometich led the Lakers (1-4), an NAIA team, with 20 points.
UIC shook off a slow start to take a 48-27 halftime lead. The Flames pushed their advantage to 42 in the second half when they put together runs of 11-0 and 13-0.
After falling behind 7-4 in the opening minutes, the Flames took the lead for good with a 13-2 run and ended the first half by scoring 8 straight points.
Minnesota to 76, Siena 69:
Freshman Austin Hollins scored 12 points in his first collegiate start, and Trevor Mbakwe added a double-double as host Minnesota (2-0) rallied past Siena (0-2).
Mbakwe finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds, Blake Hoffarber added 14 points, and Ralph Sampson III scored 12 for the Golden Gophers.
Clarence Jackson led the Saints with 29 points and Rakeem Brookins had 12.
Minnesota fell behind by as many as 11 points in the first half and trailed by 6 early in the second.
Hollins, the son of Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins, changed that in a span of two minutes when he made a pair of 3-pointers and a free throw. His 3-pointer with 14:08 to play gave Minnesota a 47-42 lead and capped a 9-0 run.
