Man killed by train early Friday in Round Lake
A man with a bicycle was fatally struck by a freight train near the Metra station in Round Lake on Railroad Avenue at about 2:30 a.m. Friday. The man did not have identification and has not yet been identified, police said. The Round Lake Police and Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District were at the scene, but Metra police handled the incident. Metra spokesperson Meg Reile said the freight engineer of the Wisconsin Southern train told police he spotted the bike and person on the tracks and then put the train into emergency braking. The scene was cleared in time for Metra trains to resume normal service Friday and no roads were closed, Reile said. Artis Yancey, Lake County coroner, said it is too early to determine why the man was on the tracks.
