Harmony Inc. to host barbershop chorus contest
Submitted by Harmony Inc.
St. Charles will host the Harmony Inc. Area 4 Contest & Convention Thursday through Sunday, June 7-10.
The women’s barbershop organization is comprised of six areas, each of which holds a competition to determine who will be allowed to advance to the international contest in November. Area 4 covers the states of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
A local chapter chorus, the Village Vocal Chords will be hostess to 12 quartets and five choruses at the four-day convention, which begins Thursday evening and concludes Sunday morning. The convention will be at the Hilton Garden Inn, 4070 East Main St., St. Charles.
The VVC are the current international championship chorus of Harmony Inc., and are therefore required to pass one year, so will not be competing at this convention. However, another local chorus, Misty River Music Makers based in Geneva, will be performing a two-song set Saturday afternoon for the chance to move onto the November contest in Orlando, Fla. Quartets from both of these choruses also will compete.
Both the quartet and chorus contests are open to the public. Tickets can be purchased at the door at $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students. The quartet contest will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday; the chorus contest will be the following day at 12:30 p.m.
Harmony Inc. is an international, nonprofit and educational organization for women barbershop singers founded in 1959 in Providence, RI. It has chapters in both the U.S. and Canada.
