Ring a bike bell, prevent a collision

My morning walk is becoming quite treacherous because of increasing numbers of bicycle riders on the sidewalks. I have always watched carefully to avoid being hit by a car as I cross neighborhood streets. Lately, however, I’ve found myself turning my head to make sure I am not in the path of some two-wheeler coming from behind and, obviously, on a mission. I am also careful when I “change lanes” on the sidewalk, lest I move into the path of one of these stealth pedalers.

At first I thought I should simply ask the rider to announce him/herself next time. However, these riders come and go so quickly I would hardly be able to get their attention, let alone state my plea. Now, after much thought, I think I have a solution. Bring back the handlebar bell! No one with normal hearing could miss that grinding alarm and would move out of the way immediately.

I am also considering getting a bicycle rear view mirror for myself. That would save my neck and allow me to be aware of a bikes approaching from behind, bell or not. I’m not asking these riders to move out to the street. I’m willing to share the sidewalk with bicycles. I just don’t want my relaxing walk marred by a collision with a vehicle whose rider is clearly more hurried than I am.
