Loyola, Mississippi State discussing hoop series

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State and Loyola are working on a contract to play a home-and-home basketball series to commemorate their historic 1963 game in the NCAA tournament.

Mississippi State spokesman Gregg Ellis confirmed the schools were discussing details of the series, but no contract has been finalized. The proposed series would include a game on Loyola’s campus in Chicago during the coming season, with a return trip to Starkville at a later date.

The all-white Mississippi State team had to sneak out of the state against a court order in 1963 because Loyola had black players. The original game was played at Jenison Fieldhouse in East Lansing, Mich. Loyola beat Mississippi State 61-51 and went on to win the NCAA tournament championship.
