Rosen to lead poetry workshop in Palatine

The Northwest Cultural Council announces a Second Saturday Poetry Workshop to be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 14, led by Deborah Nodler Rosen. Saturday’s topic will be “Poetry of Witness.”

Rosen will present poems of witness taken from the anthology, “Against Forgetting” by Carolyn Forche, with the focus on remembering injustices so that they are not repeated. After discussing all the poems brought to the workshop, participants will try writing poems of witness about today’s injustices.

Rosen is an editor of the award-winning poetry journal RHINO and serves on the Board of the UniVerse of Poetry. Her publications include: “Where We Find Ourselves: Jewish Women around the World Write about Home” and “Anwar el-Sadat.”

Her poems have been published in “Where We Live: Illinois Poets;” The Cento; The Journal of Northwestern University; Third Coast; “A Writers’ Congress;” New Poetry Appreciation, Kunming, China; and elsewhere. Her prizes include: nomination for a Pushcart Prize; First Place in both an Oregon State Poetry Association contest and a California State Poetry Society contest. She teaches poetry in the schools under a “Kids Meet Art” program.

Participants are encouraged to bring 15 copies of their own work to share with the group. Workshops take place at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. North Court, Palatine, the second Saturday of each month. All poets and writers are invited to attend the workshop. The cost is $15. RSVP to (847) 991-7966 or nwcc@northwestculturalcouncil.org.
