Grayslake garden club awards $1,000 scholarship

The Grayslake Greenery Garden Club is proud to announce Katherine Johnson of Lincolnshire as the winner of its $1,000 scholarship. Johnson has completed her bachelor's degree in geography and her master's degree in Geography Information Systems, which uses satellites and GPS-based mapping and spatial data to provide management tools for policymaking and land-use management.

She is currently working on a degree in horticulture through the College of Lake County. She feels her combination of geography and GIS studies is a great foundation, but also wants to understand the ecology of our local plant communities and what is involved in their restoration and management. Her dream is to eventually work in wetland restoration and maintenance.

The Grayslake Greenery Garden Club is a community of workers who earn money for the scholarships through their annual spring plant sale and by selling bouquets for the local dance recitals held at Grayslake Central High School. The club also contributes to the community with their work at the Senior Center, by planting and harvesting a youth garden, maintaining gardens, and making donations on Earth Day.
