Wrestling roundup: Naperville Central, Glenbard East boys win conference titles, so do Batavia girls
Naperville Central dashed DeKalb’s hopes of taking home a second straight DVC championship Saturday afternoon in Aurora at host Metea Valley.
The No. 14 Redhawks would finish with a tourney high 273 points, 16 points clear of DeKalb.
Naperville North was third with 213.5, followed by Neuqua Valley, Waubonsie Valley and Metea Valley.
No. 7 Nikolas Bestiero (215, 22-3) would lead a group of five Central men who claimed individual titles which included Ty Martin (120, 21-8), Mitchell Kaszuba (126, 23-5), Christoper Bern (157, 22-7), and William Erbeck (30-2) who won at 285 pounds.
The Naperville North trio of Adam Beedon 106, 22-6), Tyler Sternstein (132, 28-3) and Matt Murphy (190, 26-5) all would claim championship trophies on the day.
Upstate Eight: Over at Bartlett High School, Glenbard East would end its day 25 points ahead of runner-up West Chicago (229.0-204.0) to win the crown, one year after finishing second to South Elgin.
The host Hawks were third with 174.0 points. South Elgin (170.5) and Fenton with 136.5 points would round out the top five.
Waleed Binmahfooz (113, 31-5) and teammate Blake Salvino (190, 25-7) were repeat champions, as were the South Elgin trio of Demetrios Carrera (120, 30-2), Leo Rosas (150, 32-2) and heavyweight, Tommy Roath, now 30-4.
"Demetrios has dedicated himself all year to improve in all positions, while Leo prides himself on not being ridden out and getting out on bottom," said South Elgin coach Jim Gloudeman of his two state-ranked stars.
West Chicago celebrated three individual champions: Emanuel Rangel (106), Donovan Avila (138, 30-6) and Santino Milazzo (144), while Bartlett claimed two from Cameron Engels (126, 28-7) and Emilio Duenez (157, 23-9).
Fenton senior Jovany Zuniga (29-4) won at 165 pounds, as did Gabe Inorio (10-2) from Streamwood at 175.
One day earlier on Friday, East Aurora lifted the championship trophy for the second consecutive year at the UEC girls tournament in Glen Ellyn at Glenbard South.
East Aurora earned 160 points on the day, with Larkin (125.5), West Chicago (121), Glenbard East (120) and Fenton (101) following.
State-ranked Angie Carpintero (Bartlett, 110, 22-1) is now a two-time champ, as is the West Chicago duo of Jenny Espinal (135, 23-5) and Jayden Huesca-Rodriguez (190) now 8-1.
Huesca-Rodriguez, No. 3 in the state at 235, was the 2022 state champion, and 2023 state runner-up. Bartlett sophomore Lily White (24-1) was conference champion at 125.
DuKane girls: Two of the best in the state, Sydney Perry and Lily Enos, helped power Batavia to the DuKane Conference championship at host St. Charles East.
Perry (155, 31-0), a regular top five in national polls during the past two seasons, would help her club dominate the proceedings starting at 135 pounds where Amelia Howell (135, 28-14), Norah Stoodley (140, 21-21), Sarah Anderson (155, 30-9), Emma Abbate (170, 26-14) and Caoimhe Mitchell (190, 23-15) took over to help give the Bulldogs a tourney high eight overall champions.
Enos, No. 2 at 100, won easily to push her overall record to 34-7.
Top-ranked Gabby Gomez (Glenbard North, 28-0) who like Perry is nationally ranked, cruised to her title at 115 pounds.
Teammate Keagan Edwards (25-6) garnered top honors at 130, with Wheaton North claiming a pair of individual titles from Andrea Jaimes-Alvarez (12-6) at 105, and Ryan Mark (19-4) at 120 pounds.
Batavia would finish with 276.5 points, Lake Park in second with 156.0 points, and Glenbard North third (136).
