8-year prison term in Aurora meth case
A 37-year-year-old Aurora man has pleaded guilty to methamphetamine possession and been sentenced to eight years in prison.
Martin A. Cazarez-Nunez also must pay a fine of $17,385 and will have two years of court supervision after his prison term is over, according to court records.
Nunez was arrested on July 17, 2010, after Aurora police searched his residence in the 1000 block of Indian Avenue and found 545 grams of methamphetamine, two scales, plastic bags, a sawed-off shotgun, eight shells, and small amounts of marijuana and cocaine, according to court records.
At the time, authorities described the bust as a “historically large” amount of meth.
Nunez faced up to 30 years in prison on the most serious meth charges, but pleaded guilty earlier this month to a lesser methamphetamine charge that carried a sentencing range of four to 15 years behind bars.
Kane County Judge Allen Anderson accepted the plea agreement, which also gave Nunez credit for 23 months spent in jail while his case was pending, court records show.
He also can have his sentence halved for good behavior while in prison.
Nunez had been fighting his arrest, seeking to disallow statements he made to police shortly after his arrest, saying he had not been read his Miranda Rights before questioning.
A phone message with defense attorney Donald Zuelke was not returned.
