N. Ind. officer shoots man during struggle for gun

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — State police say a northern Indiana police officer fired a shot that wounded a man during a struggle over the officer’s gun.

Police say two Michigan City officers stop a car with four people inside for a traffic violation Wednesday evening when one passenger fled on foot. An officer chased the man who ran into an apartment in a nearby complex.

Police say the officer and 19-year-old Daniel Sherrod Jr. of Michigan City struggled as Sherrod tried to take the officer’s gun. The officer got control of the gun and shot Sherrod in the abdomen.

Sherrod fled again but officers found him at an acquaintance’s home about a quarter-mile away. He was taken to a South Bend hospital, but police didn’t release information about his condition.

The officer wasn’t injured.
