Three injured in Route 60 crash in Mundelein

A Great Lakes Naval sailor has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after running a red light and causing an accident in Mundelein late Monday night, police say.

Dustin K. Wallace, 21, living in the 300 block of A. Dewey Avenue at the Great Lakes Naval Base, was driving westbound on Route 60 at about 8:32 p.m. Monday night when he drove through a red light at the intersection of Route 60 and Route 45 and hit two vehicles, said Deputy Chief John Monahan of the Mundelein Police Department.

Monahan said Wallace was heading westbound on Route 60 when he slammed into the first vehicle that was making a left-hand turn from southbound Route 45 onto Route 60.

After hitting the first car, Wallace’s vehicle bounced off and hit a second car that was turning from Route 60 onto Route 45, Monahan said.

Monahan said a passenger in Wallace’s vehicle, the driver of the first vehicle, and the driver of the second vehicle were all transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with nonlife threatening injuries. Two of the injured were released later Monday, while the third was held for observation at the hospital overnight, Monahan said.

Monahan said Wallace was charged with DUI, driving too fast for conditions, disobeying a traffic control device and driving without valid insurance. His court date is unknown at this time, Monahan said.

A portion of Route 60 was shut down for about two hours as police investigated the three-vehicle crash, Monahan said.
