Romney gave more to church than nation

It’s always amusing when Priscilla Weese writes a letter to the editor. You know it will have a Republican and “Christian” bias, but you never know what fantastic assertions she will have.

She just wrote about the charitable giving of the president versus Mitt Romney. She got her Information from the head of a conservative “think” tank and forgot to mention that. She then used whichever year of data seemed to best support her argument (even when it wasn’t true).

So what are the facts — apples to apples, same years 2011 from President Obama’s actual return and the figures from the Romney campaign. (We don’t have Romney’s returns because he hasn’t filed it yet.) The President donated $172, 130 or 22 percent of his income. The biggest share was to Fisher House, which builds free or low-cost homes for veterans. Romney donated $4 million or 16 percent mostly to the Mormon church (which is already subsidized by the American taxpayer) and his family’s foundation.

The last year we have for Romney’s tax rate was 2010 when he paid 13.9 percent to the country that made his wealth possible. Yes, Mitt Romney gave more to his church than to his country. That speaks volumes.
