Woodland PTA recognizes staff for health initiatives
The Woodland Parent Teacher Association has recognized Woodland employees Lori Casey and Julia Plescia for their outstanding work in the areas of children’s and environmental health.
Casey, associate superintendent of education, along with Plescia, a head school nurse at Woodland Intermediate, have provided leadership in the area of policy and procedural development concerning student health and wellness over the past several years.
“These women, working individually as well as in collaboration, have advocated for children in several capacities,” said Dr. Joy A. Swoboda, superintendent of schools said. “One example includes implementing district practices regarding the balance of edible treats versus nonedible treats in the classroom. They are passionate about wanting to ensure that schools are a safe and healthy environment for students.”
Casey and Plescia have attended seminars, workshops and conferences to research best practices regarding the integration of health-based initiatives at Woodland. Their efforts have resulted in the implementation of systemic changes in the district that have resulted in policy and procedural changes regarding health and wellness.
Both women were invited to the May 4 PTA Wildcats Go Green 5K and 1-mile Fun Run, Plescia to start the 5 p.m. “Mighty Mile” 1-mile race/walk and Casey to start the 5:30 p.m. “Wildcat Swag” sixth-grade-and-above event.
“I am honored and thrilled that the PTA has selected these two women to represent the district as part of this inaugural event,” Swoboda said. “Each of them advocate for children’s health on a daily basis. Their spearheading efforts will make an impact for many years.”
Casey and Plescia were formally recognized at the conclusion of the 5K run/walk.
