Plane that slid off O’Hare runway made emergency landing Wednesday

An American Eagle plane that slid off a runway at O’Hare International Airport Thursday morning during an emergency landing had made an emergency landing at the airport a day earlier for a similar mechanical issue, officials said.

The Tulsa-bound plane turned back to O’Hare shortly after takeoff Thursday when an indicator light in the cockpit alerted pilots to a problem onboard, according to Greg Cunningham, a spokesman with the Chicago Department of Aviation.

During Flight 4069’s emergency landing on runway 10 at 8:38 a.m., the plane slid and veered off the runway onto a paved cargo taxiway, said American Airlines spokesman Matt Miller.

The aircraft landed safely, and none of the 28 passengers or crew of three were injured, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.

“There was a standby alert issued by the pilot prior to the landing of the aircraft,” Cunningham said.

Passengers of the Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft were taken to the terminal by bus and were put on a different aircraft, which departed at 11:08 a.m. and arrived in Tulsa at 1:24 p.m.

“This aircraft was taken out of service yesterday because of a similar issue,” Miller said.

“It was thoroughly inspected and determined to be airworthy before it was put back into service this morning.”

The aircraft was en route to Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Conn., Wednesday when it turned back for an emergency landing at O’Hare. Miller said the emergency landing was a precautionary measure.

The plane was in an American Airlines hangar at O’Hare and was being inspected as of Thursday afternoon.

“Our maintenance team is working diligently to address the issue,” Miller said.
