27 dogs taken from rural Lerna Illinois home

CHARLESTON — Authorities in east-central Illinois are looking for homes for almost two dozen dogs taken from a home in rural Lerna.

Juile Deters of the Coles County Animal Rescue and Education Center tells the Mattoon Journal-Gazette that the owner agreed to turn over 22 of her 27 dogs. But Deters says the shelter also had to take the other five because conditions didn't improve.

Deters says some of the dogs had injuries and infections and some aren't used to being around people. But she says all are expected to survive and the 22 the owner willingly surrendered can now be adopted.

The dogs available for adoption are Jack Russell terriers, rat terriers, Yorkshire terriers and a standard poodle.

Lerna is about 50 miles south of Champaign.
