Learn what to do if you become disabled

Thank you for sharing the story by Burt Constable about the amazing recovery of Chris Hradisky, who overcame a series of life-threatening challenges. (“Once homeless and dying, man is on his own with the right help,” May 6.)

Mr. Hradisky worked hard to defeat challenges that began with the onset of a serious disability that later led to unemployment and homelessness. Unfortunately, far too many like him face these same obstacles when a disability makes it too difficult to stay employed. According to a survey by Allsup Inc., 15 percent of those who file for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits are in or expect to be in foreclosure proceedings. A troubling 5 percent face bankruptcy.

The good news is that there are a few key steps to avoid financial meltdown if you or a friend cannot stay employed due to a disability.

First, file for SSDI immediately. Waiting to file a claim can delay an already arduous application process that can take months or years to get through. Next, build a monthly budget based on your current situation, since you can no longer work. It should take into account household bills, utilities, maintenance expenses, and medical fees and will help you discover ways to save money. Trimming expenses and evaluating your available income are critical after experiencing a work-ending disability.

Finally, seek assistance. Whether it’s from a friend, family member or professional representative, isolation can make matters much worse. Mr. Hradisky credited Lake County Center for Independent Living with saving his life. Resources and people can help you muscle through the financially and emotionally trying times to prevent disaster following a debilitating diagnosis.
