Battle of Bands winner:
Food & Fire won the recent Naperville Park District Youth Ambassadors’ Battle of the Bands contest and, in the process, earned a spot on the Ribfest stage July 3 in Knoch Park near downtown. The band also will represent the park district in the Illinois Park and Recreation Association’s Battle of the Bands regional competition July 28 in Glendale Heights. The winner of the regionals will advance to the finals at the Illinois State Fair in August. Nine Naperville high school student bands were selected to compete in the local finals, with This Week’s Trend finishing second and Coffee House Tipsters coming in third. Both the second- and third-place bands will play during the 7 p.m. June 8 Rollin’ on the River concert on the Riverwalk at Webster Street and Jackson Avenue in Naperville.
Woman killed by train:
A 20-year-old woman was struck and killed by a Metra train late Wednesday in Lombard, authorities said. The woman was struck around 10:45 p.m. at the intersection of the tracks and Finley Road, likely the result of a suicide.
“It was not an accident,” Lombard Deputy Police Chief Pat Rollins said. Trains on the Union Pacific West Line were delayed for more than an hour, Metra spokesman Tom Miller said.
New Aurora fire vehicles:
The Aurora City Council this week authorized spending $1.6 million on new vehicles for the fire department, including an elevated platform truck and two pumping engines. The elevated platform truck costs $839,766 and will come from Fire Service Inc., of St. John, Ind. It is the same brand, E-One, as other fire department vehicles, which fire department leaders said will help with firefighter familiarity. The two fire engines will be capable of pumping 1,500 gallons of water a minute. They replace a 16-year-old engine and a 14-year-old engine and will cost $779,216 total.
