Holiday ornaments catch fire in Batavia garage

A fire that broke out in a three-car garage in Batavia caused an estimated $125,000 in total damage, authorities said.

The fire occurred Saturday afternoon on the 400 block of Ridgelawn Trail. Batavia firefighters arrived on the scene at 2:45 p.m. to find a working fire in the garage and in attic space above. It took about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control.

Firefighters believe the fire was caused by the spontaneous combustion of holiday decorations and ornaments being stored in the garage. No serious injuries were reported. The damage estimate includes $100,000 to the structure and $25,000 to the contents inside.

A neighbor who lives across the street noticed the fire in the garage and called authorities, the Batavia Fire Department said in a news release.
