Public has to show up to be heard
I think my property taxes are too high.
LHS District 128 is the second highest tax on my property tax bill. To voice my opinion. last winter I attended two of District 128’s Finance Committee meetings and one board meeting when the board was debating how much to increase 128’s tax levy. I asked the board to levy less than the maximum. And to the board’s credit, they ultimately abated 128’s tax request (reduced the amount of taxes that they will collect).
But the real point here is I was the only person from the public attending the finance committee meetings. No one else voiced an opinion that the taxes for 128 are too high.
I am told that very few people attend meetings of our other taxing bodies — villages, grade schools, etc.
How can we expect our appointed and elected board members to keep a reign on spending if we do not let them know this is what we want?
