Arlington Heights Library Board: Unumb, Nelson, Smart

Daily Herald Editorial Board

Arlington Heights residents are lucky to have five solid candidates running to fill three seats on the library board: Debbie Smart, David Unumb, Deborah Nelson, John Brody Garkisch and Frank Biga III.

Unumb, a veteran of the board since 1983, brings a wealth of experience while keeping a firm eye on the future. Nelson, the current treasurer/finance committee chair and strategic planning committee chair, has served the library well for the past three years. Both are endorsed.

That leaves three political newcomers, all of whom would serve the district well. Garkisch brings perspective as a parent with three children who use the library. Bigga, a high school teacher, brings the perspective of an educator. And Smart brings the perspective of a business person with a deep love of books and the library. Smart, who organizes a local book club and has put on displays at the library, is endorsed. Her business sense, with a dash of idealism, will serve the library well in lean times.
