Willows cast shines in 'Beauty and The Beast'
Last weekend students at The Willows Academy, an independent college preparatory school for girls in Des Plaines, performed Disney's “Beauty and the Beast” in front of sold out audiences.
The students performed six shows, including a matinee performance for local elementary schools Embers Elementary and Seaton Academy and a special performance and pizza party with the cast for residents from Misericordia.
The Willows Academy's spring musical is open to the entire student body from grades 6 through 12. More than 80 students offered their various talents, from performing in lead roles to stage crew and building the sets.
The production was double cast, allowing for more student participation and the opportunity for one of the youngest students to have a principal role as Chip the tea cup!
The production not only brought together the student body, but also allowed for parents to have the opportunity to give of their talents. Karen Wilberg, director of the Fine Arts Department and Dean of Students, said Willows musicals are truly a family undertaking.
“Families come together to help build sets and create costumes,” she said. “Parents are instrumental in assisting in the preparation of the show, providing choreography and technical support and guidance.”
The real bulk of the work came in transforming The Willows Academy's gymnasium into the small French town and enchanted castle. Months of preparation and teamwork between students and parents paid off as audience members found themselves being whisked off to a far off land full of adventure and excitement.
The Willows Academy, at 1012 Thacker St., Des Plaines, is a college prep, Catholic school for girls in grades 6-12, founded in 1974. For more information visit willowsacademy.org.
