Poets, writers invited to morning workshop

The Northwest Cultural Council will hold its Second Saturday Poetry Workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 14. Poet Arlyn Miller will lead “A Light Breakfast: Poems Suitable for Breakfast Reading.”

Historically thought of as a poem or song greeting the dawn, they will explore the aubade in a broader context. The group will look at some traditional aubades as well as some of the poems in “A Light Breakfast. “Through guided writing exercises, explore the experience of greeting a new day and the array of images and emotions that can arise with the morning sun. She also will talk about the collaboration involved in launching a new press and collection of poems. Poems brought to workshop need not be aubades.

Miller is a poet, essayist, and journalist. Her poetry has been published in numerous journals including After Hours, Calyx, the English Journal, and Poetica. Her articles and essays have appeared in Illinois Times, Make It Better, and Quintessential New Trier among other publications. Miller teaches creative writing in schools and in the community through Poetic License Inc. She recently launched Poetic License Press and its inaugural publication, “A Light Breakfast,” a gathering of poems suitable for breakfast reading written by 27 poets.

Participants are encouraged to bring 15 copies of their own work to share with the group. Workshops take place at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. North Court, Palatine on the second Saturday of each month. All poets and writers are invited to attend the workshop. The cost is $15.
