Animal shelter opens due to Wis. cat with 26 toes
GREENFIELD, Wis. — The Milwaukee area shelter saved by a cat with 26 toes is opening at its new location.
Daniel has two extra toes on each foot due to a genetic mutation called polydactylism. The nonprofit Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center rescued him last fall, about the time they discovered their rent at an area mall was being doubled.
So, they started seeking donations of $26 — $1 for each toe. They raised about $125,000 in about six weeks.
Center owner Amy Rowell says the building in Greenfield opens Saturday.
After buying it, Rowell discovered there was no way to fix the basement that is not up to code. So she plans to raise more money to build a new shelter in the future.
Daniel has since become the shelter mascot.
