The blizzard in Wheeling by the numbers

During last week’s blizzard, Wheeling’s public works employees plowed more than 5,450 miles in four days, using 945 gallons of unleaded fuel (costing $2,634) and 1,874 gallons of diesel fuel (costing to $5,919).

Crews plowed continually for 100 hours, distributing nearly 200 tons of salt, through Saturday, Feb. 5. Many employees slept overnight at the public works building, and all told they put in nearly 2,500 hours of staff time cleaning up after the storm.

The cost of the storm is still being calculated, according to Tony Stavros, Wheeling’s director of public works.
