State treasurer: Rutherford

The primary job of the treasurer's office is to wisely invest taxpayers' money.

Republican Dan Rutherford, a state senator and 18-year legislator from Pontiac, wants to focus on that goal with a critical eye on programs that duplicate other services the state provides. In tough times, we agree with his back-to-basics approach.

We endorse Rutherford, a businessman with extensive corporate experience who has the skills to root out lapses in efficiency. He also would begin immediately to work with the new comptroller to combine the two offices.

Democratic opponent Robin Kelly, the treasurer's current chief of staff, deserves praise for helping to reduce staff and expenses, but we have concerns the focus of the office reaches beyond its core function.

Joining them on the ballot are Green Party's Scott Summers and Libertarian James Pauly.
