Chicago students get chance to study in China
Fifteen Chicago public school students will get a chance to study in China this summer.
It’s part of a national program under President Barack Obama to increase the number and diversity of U.S. students studying in China over a five-year period.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will formally announce the participation of Chicago students in the 100,000 Strong Initiative at an event in Beijing on May 4.
The students will be selected from Lindblom Math & Science Academy and Walter Payton College Preparatory High School.
Chicago Public Schools offers Mandarin language instruction as part of its curriculum at 25 elementary schools and 23 high schools.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the study-abroad program will provide “life-changing opportunities.”
The six-week program includes language study, cultural activities and community service work.
