Marmion-Rosary musicians win awards

The Marmion-Rosary Band competed in the North Shore District Wisconsin School Music Association Solo and Ensemble Contest on March 17.

The musicians earned a total of 68 first division gold medals (63 Class A and 5 Class B gold medals) and 23 silver medals. Fifty of these students will compete in the State Solo and Ensemble contest on April 28 at the University of Wisconsin — Parkside. Students selected performed literature from the most difficult list (class A) and received a “star first rating.”

Students receiving one or more class A star gold medals were: Sam Eallonardo (Yorkville) — bassoon; Thomas Sieben (Aurora) — alto sax; Brett Koskinen (North Aurora) -trumpet; Tom Schafer (Batavia) — trumpet; Alex Lopez (Lisle) — trumpet; Kevin Hoss (Sugar Grove) — horn; Benton Winscott (North Aurora) — trombone; Timothy Kritzler (Downers Grove) — trombone; Benjamin Pho (Maple Park) — piano; Thomas Sieben and Robert Stephens (Bartlett) — saxophone duet; Tom Schafer, Alex Lopez (Lisle), Kevin Hoss, Joseph Dutton (Batavia) and Daniel Klug (Oswego) — brass quintet; Michael Shares (St. Charles), Alex Lopez, and Tom Schafer — trumpet trio; Benjamin Pho, Victoria Pho (Maple Park), John Sieben (Aurora), Dan Gotlund (St. Charles), Jacob Kluber (Batavia), Justin Whitmer (Montgomery) and Mary Kate Naughton (St. Charles) — percussion ensemble; John Sieben, Mary Kate Naughton, Julia Hoyda (Sugar Grove), Genevieve Streich (Aurora), Thomas Sieben, Ben Pho, and Dan Gotlund — Marmion-Rosary Jazz Combo; and Thomas Sieben, Robert Stephens, Genevieve Streich, Henry Quinn (St. Charles), Jack Stover (Naperville), Michael Shares, Tom Schafer, Brett Koskinen, Alex Trotsky (Yorkville), Matthew Wedll (North Aurora), Timothy Kritzler, Julia Hoyda, Isabel Trujillo (Aurora), Joseph Dutton, Dan Gotlund, Benjamin Pho, Mary Kate Naughton, Justin Whitmer, and John Sieben — Marmion-Rosary Jazz Band.

Those students receiving one or more class A gold medals were: Magdalene Eallonardo (Yorkville) — flute; Paige Robinson (Sugar Grove) — clarinet; Genevieve Streich- clarinet; Robert Stephens — alto sax; Elise McArdle (Batavia) — horn; Joseph Dutton — trombone; Colin Angeles (Aurora) — trombone; Julia Hoyda- trombone; Ryanne Jenig (Romeoville) — trombone; and Dan Gotlund and Jacob Kuber — Parade drum duet.

Those students receiving one or more class B gold medals were: Arion Huebner (North Aurora) — oboe; Victoria Pho — oboe; Andres Lerma (Plano) — bari sax; Matt Higgs (Aurora) — trumpet; and Patrick Baker (Batavia) — trombone.

The band is made up of students from Marmion Academy and Rosary High School, under the direction of Stephen Thurlow. The program is dedicated to developing the highest standards of musical excellence and inspiring the band’s members to lead. For more information, visit marmion.org.
