“Lost Prairie” exhibit opens

Leading ecologist Steve Apfelbaum will discuss his part in the discovery of Buffalo Grove’s lost prairie at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Raupp Museum, 901 Dunham Lane, Buffalo Grove. This event kicks off the “The Lost Prairie” exhibit which tells the history of the Buffalo Grove Prairie, a 10-acre lot that once was part of a much larger grassland but was eaten away by industrial development. Apfelbaum, one of the nation’s most respected ecologists and an expert in the field of land restoration, was among volunteers who “discovered” the area in the late 1980s and convinced landowner ComEd to protect and preserve the space. Apfelbaum will answer questions about the prairie, environmental health and protection, and restoration ecology in the Midwest. A book signing follows at 8 p.m.
