Peavy feeling better, to throw Sunday
GLENDALE, Ariz. — White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy said he played catch Saturday and that he hopes to throw off a mound Sunday.
Peavy, who already was on the mend from major shoulder surgery, now is dealing with right-shoulder discomfort, believed to be rotator-cuff tendinitis. The club says his program is ongoing, although Peavy said he hopes he can see some sort of game action next week.
“I felt quite a bit better than I had a few days ago,” he said. “I'm going to treat (Sunday) as a side session and hopefully work on stuff. Obviously, you need to throw all pitches to get back in the feel of things because I haven't been on a mound since my last start (March 19).
“But yeah, depending on what the game plan is on when they want me on the mound will dictate what we do. But the biggest thing is to get on the mound and hoping everything feels the way it did today.
“If I get on a mound and everything is good, we'll treat it like missing a start. I don't think I'm going to jump in and throw 80 pitches again. I think we'll probably back down and build that process up, hopefully sooner rather than later.”
Eleven or 12 pitchers?White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said he knows the makeup of the 25-man roster but said no announcement would come for a couple days. It could be that the Sox go with 11 pitchers and keep both infielder Jeff Lillibridge and nonroster outfielder Lastings Milledge. Pitcher Jeff Marquez started Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Angels and went 4 innings, giving up 6 hits and 3 runs. If the Sox keep 11 pitchers, it's possible Marquez could be the odd man out. #8220;He pitched well,#8221; Guillen said. #8220;He did everything we asked him to do, and that's the best spring training he's had #8212; put it that way, since we have him. But meanwhile, you have to make moves sometimes, (and) the last move always hurts.#8221;#8220;We don't know yet (on 11 or 12 pitchers). Obviously you guys can see how many people we've got left. I'm not going to say who's in and who's out, for a lot of reasons.#8221;Cashner rebounds:Newly minted Cubs fifth starter Andrew Cashner survived a 5-run first inning in the Cubs' 6-5 win over the Rangers at Surprise, Ariz. He committed an error in the inning, but settled down nicely after that. He got the win, giving up 7 hits and no more runs in 5 innings. Cashner walked one and struck out five.#8220;The biggest thing for me today is competing after that first inning,#8221; he told reporters. #8220;It's tough giving up a five spot in the first. The biggest thing I did was battle, and I didn't let that faze me.#8221;Cubs all set: The Cubs all but finalized their opening-day roster. They optioned right-handed starting pitcher Casey Coleman and righty reliever Jeff Stevens to Class AAA Iowa. The Cubs list 28 players on the roster, but pitcher Carlos Silva won't make it, and the Cubs still need to send two catchers out. Veteran Koyie Hill is the likely backup to starting catcher Geovany Soto. This and that: Cubs infielder Jeff Baker will miss the weekend games with a tight left hamstring. Baker came out of Friday's game with the injury, which the Cubs say is not serious. ... White Sox left fielder Juan Pierre returned to the lineup after missing Friday's game with a bruised right shin. ... The White Sox re-signed pitcher Dexter Carter after San Diego released him. The Sox sent Carter to the Padres as part of the Jake Peavy deal.
