Dartmouth frat gets 3-year probation for hazing

CONCORD, N.H. — A Dartmouth College fraternity accused of hazing has been put on probation for three years and ordered to participate in an extensive series of educational programs.

The New Hampshire college’s judicial panel found Sigma Alpha Epsilon guilty of hazing for expecting pledges in 2009 to participate in activities including drinking shots of saltwater and swimming in a kiddie pool filled with food. But the college says there was not enough evidence to back up the more graphic allegations made by a former member, who said pledges were pressured to swim in and swallow vomit.

Based on those allegations, Dartmouth charged the fraternity and 27 students with hazing, but later dropped the individual charges. The fraternity must adopt a new member education plan and add provisions to its alcohol management plan.
