Garage sale permits required in Hoffman Estates

As of Jan. 1, 2012, the village of Hoffman Estates requires a no-fee permit for all garage, estate and yard sales.

The permit can be applied for and picked up at the village hall, 1900 Hassell Road. The permit is also available by sending an email to garagesales@hoffmanestates.org. It is recommended to apply for the permit at least 48 hours in advance of the sale.

Some of the new requirements are:

Ÿ Garage sales are only allowed Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Ÿ Each garage sale may be held for up to three consecutive days.

Ÿ A maximum of three garage sales are allowed at the same address during the calendar year (January to December).

Ÿ Garage sale hours are only allowed between 9 a.m. to no later than 5 p.m.

Ÿ Only one on-site garage sale sign is permitted on the front lawn.

Ÿ Up to two directional signs may be allowed to be installed on additional private property, but only with the permission of the property owner.

Ÿ Signs shall not be posted prior to 6 a.m. on the day of the sale, and must be removed within three hours of the conclusion of the sale, or 8 p.m. at the latest.

Ÿ Garage sale signs are not allowed to be posted in any public right-of-way, on street signs or on utility/light poles.

Ÿ Banners, balloons, streamers and the like are not allowed.
