Fire leaves Elgin area home uninhabitable
Three residents were displaced Sunday after an early morning fire left an Elgin area home uninhabitable.
Firefighters were called to the home in the 11N500 block of Rohrssen Road shortly before 6:30 a.m., said Bartlett Fire Protection District Lt. Brian Corn.
A married couple and their daughter were home when the fire started in a bedroom in the northwest corner of the house, Corn said, but managed to escape without serious harm. One resident was treated on the scene for a medical problem unrelated to the fire and no firefighters were injured, he said.
Extinguishing the blaze took more work than might be typical because there were no fire hydrants near the house, which is east of Elgin.
“Anywhere there’s not fire hydrants, we have to bring in tankers and shuttle in water,” Corn said. “It’s a longer setup period.”
Fire investigators estimated $100,000 in damage to the house itself and another $30,000 in damage to its contents.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
