Holocaust survivor, author to speak at Advocate Good Shepherd

Submitted by Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital

Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, will be observed at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital Thursday, April 19, with a guest speaker who has written an autobiography on his experience.

Samuel R. Harris, a Barrington resident, was just 4-years-old in 1939 when Hitler overran his town of Demblin, Poland. Hitler destroyed Harris’s large family and Samuel spent the next three and a half years in two concentration camps in Demblin and Czestochowa. When Harris was nine, he was liberated by the Russian Army.

Harris went on to graduate Grinnell College in Iowa in 1958 where he received his bachelor of arts degree in political science. He joined Equitable Life Assurance Society in 1960 where he served as an agent until his promotion to district. He also qualified for the exclusive Equitable Hall of Fame. Harris has been retired for a number of years and is a strong supporter of Good Shepherd Hospital with his wife Dede.

Harris published his autobiography “Sammy, Child Survivor of the Holocaust” in 2001. Second and third editions were printed in 2005 and 2010.

This Lunch and Learn will take place in the hospital’s private dining room from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. RSVP by calling (847) 842-5062.
