San Francisco seeks injunction against 2 gangs

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco is seeking a court injunction against two street gangs whose clashes have left 10 people dead in a southern neighborhood of the city.

The city attorney filed a complaint Thursday in San Francisco Superior Court against 25 members of the Down Below gang and 16 members of the Towerside gang in Visitacion Valley.

City Attorney Dennis Herrera says their fighting has left residents in a state of siege.

The injunction would stop the gang members from meeting with other gang members, loitering, flashing gang signs and other activities. It would create a safety zone around three public housing projects.

The named gang members can ask authorities to get them off the list.

If the injunction is granted by a judge, it would be the fourth in the city over the last four years.
