Coke to honor Lake Co. exec killed in crash
The Coca-Cola Co. is planning to memorialize an executive who died this week when his car collided with a Metra train in Des Plaines, a company spokesman said.
Timothy Jones, 51, of Hawthorn Woods, worked at the beverage company for 26 years. Most recently the vice president for the Chicago-Milwaukee market unit, he started as a warehouse delivery worker in Massachusetts, said Kevin Morris, vice president of public affairs and communications for the company.
Jones worked with Morris at Coca-Cola's Niles office, and they were friends. Morris described Jones as a genuine, thoughtful and likable person who had a great sense of humor.
Outside of the office, Jones liked to play golf, loved music and was a Chicago Blackhawks fan, Morris said.
"He was loved by all and will be very deeply missed," Morris said.
Corporate memorial plans are being developed, Morris said.
Jones died Wednesday after his car collided with a train in downtown Des Plaines. Police said Jones ignored a no-left-turn sign, crossing gates and flashing lights at the railroad crossing.
Jones' survivors include: his wife, Tina; four children; his parents and three siblings.
Visitation and services will be in Massachusetts. A memorial service in the Chicago area will be planned.
Instead of flowers, people can make donations to their local Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
