Gurnee fire receives grants for equipment

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded a $78,000 grant to the Gurnee Fire Department for the purchase of a self-contained breathing apparatus cascade and filling station for a west side firehouse.

The grant also will fund one washer/extractor for fire station No. 1 on Old Grand Avenue and No. 2 on Dada Drive on the west side.

“We are extremely pleased to have received this grant during these economic times,” Gurnee Fire Chief Fred Friedl said. “There is no resource more valuable than an in-service firefighter, and this equipment helps ensure that both the Gurnee Fire Department and any other emergency responders will be fully prepared to respond.”

Self-contained breathing apparatus cascade stations refill a breathing apparatus with air that firefighters use while working a blaze. Washer/extractors allow for better and more efficient cleaning of personal protective equipment, officials said.
