Judge dismisses rape victim’s suit against Arlington Heights cop
A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by a girl who was raped after an Arlington Heights police officer left her with a 20-year-old and 2 teenagers while she was so intoxicated she could not stand. The men told the officer they would take the girl home, but a Mount Prospect officer responding to a second 911 call shortly after observed the rape. The initial officer responding to the report of teens drinking told a dispatcher he didn’t find anyone at the scene. Full story.
Grayslake police chief charged with DUI after head-on crash
Grayslake Police Chief Matthew McCutcheon is facing driving under the influence charges after his involvement in a head-on collision Friday night in Kenosha County. He was swaying back and forth with glassy eyes when officers arrived, according to a police report, and was in possession of a loaded handgun while being interviewed by police at the scene. Grayslake officials have scheduled a closed-door meeting for today regarding “personnel,” but did not indicate whether it involved the charges facing its new police chief. Full story.
DirecTV subscribers will be able to watch Cub’s opener on WGN
Today is opening day on the North Side and DirecTV subscribers can breathe a sigh of relief. The Cubs’ game will be broadcast on WGN-TV after all. Tribune Broadcasting announced last night that it had reached an agreement with DirecTV after the Tribune pulled WGN programming on Sunday after negotiations broke down over fees. Full story.
District 203 names interim superintendent
A 41-year-old assistant superintendent for secondary education will take over as interim superintendent at Naperville Unit District 203. Dan Bridges, who joined the district last summer, fills the role left by Mark Mitrovich, who unexpectedly announced his plans to leave after three years with the district. School board officials said Bridges was hired as someone who could be groomed for the top spot. Full story.
ID of weekend crash victim in Warrenville expected today
The DuPage County coroner is expected today to identify the victim of a fiery single-vehicle crash that killed the lone occupant over the weekend in Warrenville. The coroner’s office is comparing forensic evidence from the scene of the crash, where the vehicle struck a natural gas line. “The fire was so devastating, at this point it’s unknown,” said coroner Peter Siekmann. Unknown yellow substance appearing in Elgin creek
Elgin officials are on the lookout for a yellow substance that has appeared in Tyler Creek twice in the past week. The creek runs into the Fox River where Elgin and South Elgin pump water for public use. Officials said the substance dilutes in water and it is believed to be relatively benign because of how quickly it dilutes. Crews tested a very diluted sample this week but came to no conclusions. Not looking good for opening day at Wrigley. It will only be about 42 degrees when you head out the door this morning, and the high temperatures will only be about 52 degrees today. The worst part is that it will dip to about 32 degrees overnight tonight and potentially frost over. Full story.
Traffic
No major accidents overnight or early Thursday slowing things down, so traffic is moving as best as can be expected. Motorists are asked to avoid Lake Cook Road between Wilmot Road and Pfingsten Road in Deerfield because of heavy construction delays. There will be periodic daytime lane closures due to roadwork through May 11. Full story.
Chicago Rush ownership taken over by league
The Arena Football League has taken over control of the Chicago Rush, according to published reports. Former Rush co-owner Bill Niro told Crain’s Chicago Business that the group of owners who took over in 2009 disbanded at the end of the 2011 season. Full story.
