Lines blurring between work, play with smartphones

Ever feel like the lines are blurring on what's work and what's play when using your smartphone? You're not alone.

A survey released this week by Libertyville-based Motorola Mobility said that nearly half of the respondents were awakened at night by a work call, text or e-mail and 53 percent check their work e-mails while on vacation.

Other findings said:

Ÿ14 percent said they responded to work e-mails while in bed.

Ÿ30 percent said they use their smartphones to text, play a game, list to music or watch a video while bored during a work meeting.

Ÿ15 percent have accidentally e-mailed or texted a personal note to a work colleague, customer, or client from their smartphone.

Ÿ20 percent used their mobile phones for business while drinking after business hours or on the weekend.

Ÿ50 percent admit to “friending” co-workers on social networking sites.

Motorola Mobility hired Wakefield Research (www.wakefieldresearch.com) to conduct the survey between March 21-24. About 1,000 people, age 18 and older, responded to an online survey.

It was done to gather insight on how Motorola's Cliq2 “could ease the stress of achieving work/life balance,” said Motorola Mobility spokeswoman Kristine Mulford.

But the respondents didn't necessarily have a Cliq2, she said.

The Cliq2 is the company's updated Android smartphone with a 1-gigahertz processor and operating on the 4G wireless network. It also has a 3.7-inch high definition display.
