Senior rebates coming late for Elgin residents in Cook

Some 880 Elgin seniors who own homes on the Cook County side of town will receive their property tax rebate checks late.

The delay is due to Cook County's delay in sending out tax bills, according to a news release from the city. Cook County also hasn't provided the city with a list of senior-exempted properties.

Checks are normally sent to seniors by November, but this year they should receive them by the end of January.

The city's senior citizen tax rebate program, which began in 1997, gives senior homeowners a $200 rebate, or $35 for the owners of mobile homes.

In 2009, about 830 Cook County senior homeowners and 50 mobile home owners applied for the program, said RuthAnn Hall, the city's budget and purchasing director.

On the city's Kane County side, 2,750 homeowners and 295 mobile home owners applied.

Rebates for Kane County residents are normally mailed by July, according to the city's website.

The city spends $825,000 on the rebate program, which is funded with revenue received from the Grand Victoria Casino fund.
