Schaumburg man charged with DUI following crash

A Schaumburg man who authorities say fled from police after he crashed his car into a guardrail near Roselle Road at I-90 Sunday faces aggravated DUI charges.

Cook County Judge Jill Cerone Marisie set bail at $75,000 Monday for Charles Franklin, 37, who prosecutors say registered a blood-alcohol level of 0.223 following his arrest, more than twice the legal threshold of 0.08.

Franklin, of the 0-100 block of Remington Road, ran from the vehicle down an embankment after the crash, which a witness reported to police, said Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Lesley Gool. After police arrived, the witness alerted police to the whereabouts of Franklin, who was found under a pine tree, Gool said.

Franklin has a pending case for driving on a revoked license in Lake County, Gool said. His criminal background also includes a 1996 conviction for aggravated criminal sexual abuse, for which he received a 12-year sentence, as well as convictions for DUI, driving on a suspended license, possession of a controlled substance and domestic violence.

Franklin next appears in court on April 4.
