Wis. DNR looking for sturgeon protectors

OSHKOSH, Wis. — The state Department of Natural Resources is looking for a few good men and women to guard sturgeon.

Starting in mid-April, sturgeon will make their annual journey through the Lake Winnebago system and up the Wolf River to spawn. Every year the DNR positions volunteers on the shorelines to guard the giant prehistoric fish and make sure no one nets or spears them.

The agency is looking for recruits for this year’s guard duty. The work isn’t easy — volunteers face 12-hour shifts and all manner of weather.
