Ruse burglars strike elderly victim in scam near Beach Park
Lake County Sheriff's officials are warning homeowners to be wary of strangers knocking on their door and distracting them while someone else enters and steals items.
Lt. Christopher Thompson said that scenario, called a ruse burglary, took place Tuesday in the 39200 block of Lewis Avenue near Beach Park.
Three Hispanic males arrived at the home, knocked on the door, and coaxed the 87-year-old resident outside for a discussion.
As two of the offenders spoke with the victim, Thompson said, the third male entered the house and took approximately $9,000 in cash.
Thompson said the victim reported the offenders were driving a black pickup truck with what appeared to be a blue tarp covering the truck bed.
“We are encouraging the Beach Park community to be vigilant and report anything that looks suspicious,” Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said.
Anyone with information regarding this ruse burglary is asked to call the Criminal Investigations Division at (847) 377-4250.
