Some key numbers for White Sox fans to watch

Numbers matter in baseball. In the case of the White Sox, perhaps more than any team, numbers that lead to wins lead to bigger numbers at the turnstyles. From slow starts to expensive salaries career milestones, there are some significant numbers to watch this season on the south side. Here’s a look at the 2012 White Sox by the numbers:

8

The White Sox lost 8 games last season when leading after the eighth inning. The Sox had big closing issues early and again in September, when Sergio Santos allowed 9 runs in 8.2 innings. Santos was traded to Toronto, and the White Sox are hoping Addison Reed gets real good real fast.

19-32

That’s the Sox’ record the past two Aprils. New manager Robin Ventura is aware of the need to get off to a better start, but the White Sox play the Rangers, Tigers, Indians and Red Sox in the opening month.

11, 42

In home runs and RBI, that’s what the White Sox got out of Adam Dunn last year. From 2004-10, Dunn averaged 40 home runs and 100 RBI per season.

389 and counting

Paul Konerko has 389 home runs with the Sox, and he trails all-time leader Frank Thomas by 59. Konerko has two years left on his contract and at age 36, he’s showing no signs of slowing down.

$72 million

That is the total amount the Sox owe Adam Dunn and Alex Rios over the next three seasons.

.349, 6 HR, 27 RBI

Those were Dayan Viciedo’s numbers last May at Class AAA Charlotte. He doesn’t have to be that good with the White Sox, but the outfielder’s bat has been quiet.

Dayan Viciedo, right, did some good things at the end of last season, but the White Sox need more production from him than they’ve seen in spring training so far. Associated Press
