Carpentersville detectives catch man changing utility meters

An undercover sting by Carpentersville police caught a Cicero man tampering with utility meters Monday, officials said.

Jesus Duran, 30, of the 1800 block of South 58th Street, is charged with changing the meter readings on Nicor and ComEd equipment, according to Carpentersville Cmdr. Tim Bosshart.

“We received information that this guy was tampering with gas and electric meters for cash,” Bosshart said.

Detectives set up a meeting with Duran, who showed up at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the 100 block of Granada Road, accepted payment and changed the meters, according to Bosshart.

Duran appeared in Kane County bond court Tuesday for the two felony charges. Bail was set at $10,000, of which Duran must pay 10 percent to be released before his next court date. He is scheduled to appear April 4 at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles.
