Palatine to continue farmers market into winter

Given the summerlike weather we’ve been enjoying, it seems appropriate that preparations are under way for the Palatine Farmers Market.

This year comes with a twist, however, as the village celebrates the market’s 20th anniversary.

In addition to the regular gatherings that take place 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, May 5 to Oct. 27, Palatine will host Winter Market Days so residents can get their fix of crafts, cakes and other homemade concoctions during the cold season.

Village Clerk Marg Duer said the winter market will be held monthly from 9 a.m. to noon starting in fall 2012. The tentative dates are Nov. 17, Dec. 15, Jan. 19, Feb. 9, March 9 and April 13.

Some Saturdays also will feature charitable causes, including Toys for Tots and Palatine Township Food Pantry drives.

Obviously, locally grown fresh produce won’t be available during Winter Market Days. But Duer said vendors will showcase many other items, making it well worth the trip to the Metra station parking lot at Wood and Brockway streets.
