Gorman leads in Cook Co. Board Dist. 17

A nasty campaign led to an unexpectedly close race for Cook County Board District 17 incumbent Elizabeth "Liz" Gorman.

Ultimately, Gorman emerged victorious over Maine Township Republican Committeman Mark Thompson in Tuesday's Republican primary. With 275 of 278 precincts reporting, unofficial results show Gorman with 11,653 votes to Thompson's 9,091.

"People just wanted to get behind a person on the county board who is doing the right thing," Gorman said. "We're going to continue to reform Cook County government. It seems the tide is starting to turn."

Thompson, a Des Plaines attorney, said he was hurt by higher voter turnout in the south end of the district, where Gorman lives. Gorman, of Orland Park, has been on the board since 2002.

"We knew we were up against a lot," Thompson said. "My campaign was one based on major reform on the Cook County Board, and I think that resonated with people. Putting the same people back on the board wasn't going to change anything there."
