Fast-growing C. Ind. town cleared for city vote
FISHERS, Ind. — Fishers leaders say they’re ready to go ahead with a November referendum on whether the fast-growing Indianapolis suburb should become a city.
A proposal set for the Nov. 6 ballot would have the current Fishers town government merge with unincorporated Fall Creek Township, with the new city council selecting one of its members as mayor rather than having the mayor elected directly by voters.
The Indianapolis Star reports (http://indy.st/GAhBm8) the referendum can proceed following a state Supreme Court decision upholding the ability of the town and township officials to offer the alternative plan for picking a mayor.
Census figures show Fishers now has some 77,000 residents, making it one of the state’s 10 largest communities and more than twice the size of any other town.
